Where to take out of town guests in charlotte (with kids)
When family or friends come to visit, the pressure’s on to plan something fun that shows off the best of Charlotte and keeps the kids happy. After plenty of exploring around the Queen City, I’ve rounded up a few go-to spots that our family loves — places that mix a little adventure, local flavor, and easy fun for all ages.
Check out my Instagram Reel on this topic.
Activities:
U.S. National Whitewater Center — @usnwc
This is always my number one pick for out-of-town guests. With trails, zip-lines, rafting, climbing, live music, and plenty of food and drink options, it’s a full-day adventure that never gets old. We also love the Wildwoods playground for younger kids.
Discovery Place Science — @discoveryplacescience
Right in the heart of Uptown, this hands-on museum is packed with interactive exhibits that appeal to both kids and adults. From science experiments to rotating exhibits like Above & Beyond, it’s the perfect mix of fun and learning — and a great rainy-day option too.
Sullenberger Aviation Museum — @sullenbergeraviationmuseum
One of Charlotte’s newest reopenings and such a hit with kids who love planes! Families can explore aircraft up close, learn about “The Miracle on the Hudson,” and experience the wonder of flight through interactive displays.
Carowinds
A theme park with a variety of rides for all ages.
ImaginOn in Uptown Charlotte
A free public library with play spaces. Be sure to check out their Storytime sessions and special shows/events.
Daniel Stowe Conservancy
A beautiful garden that includes trails, a children’s garden play space, and new Prairie Castle Playground.
Freedom Park
One of the most beautiful parks in Charlotte that includes playgrounds, walking trails, and a nice pond.
Sporting event:
Depending on the season you can see the Charlotte Knights, Charlotte FC, Carolina Panthers and several other pro or semi-pro sports teams.
Where to Eat (with space for kids to play):
The Bowl CLT — @thebowlnc
When you want something relaxed but still fun, head to The Bowl — a vibrant new entertainment spot with lots of restaurants all in the same area. There is also a nice playground (Stream Park) right by this area as well. Some of our favorites for families are Olde Meck Brewery, Bossy Beulah’s, Flower Child, Harriet’s Hamburgers, Honeysuckle Gelato, and The Salty Donut.
Olde Mecklenburg Brewery — @oldemeckbrew
This Charlotte classic is always a crowd-pleaser. Their massive outdoor Biergarten is family-friendly, with tons of open space for the kids to run around while the grown-ups enjoy a local pint. Add live music or a seasonal festival, and it’s an easy win. We like both locations - Ballantyne and South End.
Suffolk Punch SouthPark — @suffolkpunchsouthpark
A great daytime or dinner spot where you’ll find great coffee, craft drinks, and a delicious menu — plus it’s right by the mall playground so kids can play while waiting for their meal.
The Tipsy Pickle CLT — @tipsypickleclt
A fun local favorite where you can play pickleball, other games, and enjoy a meal. It’s a fun and lively atmosphere located right at Camp North End which is a great spot to walk around and enjoy before or after a meal. Also, be sure to check out Camp North End’s special events.
Seoul Food Meat Co. — @seoulfoodmeatco - Noda location
Located in Noda and known for Korean‐fusion BBQ, this fun restaurant includes a big kid-friendly outdoor play space with a playground and splash pad.
Whether you’ve got grandparents, cousins, or your best friend’s family in town, these spots show off the best of Charlotte in a way that’s fun for everyone.
